Cheap Home Services in Raleigh, NC: The New Leaf Pickup Rules and How to Save This Fall

By BetterBuyTheBlock Team • OCT 7, 2026

A Raleigh guide for fall 2026: the end of loose-leaf vacuum collection and the new weekly yard waste pickup, what older Raleigh homes need, and real group-deal prices for lawn care, HVAC, pest control, and roofing.

Fall 2026 is the first leaf season in years that works differently in Raleigh. The City has ended its loose-leaf vacuum collection, where you raked leaves to the curb and a truck picked them up, and replaced it with weekly yard waste pickup. A lot of homeowners are going to be raking leaves to the curb out of habit this fall, and those piles won't be collected.

This guide explains the new rules, when it makes sense to pay someone to handle leaves and when it doesn't, what Raleigh's older housing stock means for repair costs, and the cheap, discounted way to book home services with your neighbors.

The End of Loose-Leaf Collection in Raleigh

Starting September 8, 2026, the City of Raleigh collects yard waste every week instead of every other week, and leaves now go out with that weekly yard waste. Each week you can set out your green yard waste cart, up to 15 biodegradable paper bags, and up to five bundles of tied sticks and twigs. The City says there's no more raking or blowing leaves to the curb.

Collection days stay the same as before. If one cart isn't enough, the City offers a second yard waste cart for $55 plus $2 a month. For your exact collection day and current fees, check the City of Raleigh's Solid Waste Services pages or call 919-996-3245.

Should You Pay Someone to Handle Leaves?

For most yards, no. A mulching mower that chops leaves into the lawn costs nothing extra and feeds the grass. Leaves that won't mulch can go in paper bags with your weekly pickup. Fifteen bags a week covers most Raleigh lots.

Paying a lawn crew makes sense for big lots under mature oaks, where the leaf volume outruns 15 bags a week, or if you'd rather not do it yourself. In that case, book a recurring fall cleanup instead of a one-off visit, and ask whether the crew hauls the leaves away or bags them for your weekly pickup. A crew that leaves them for the City's pickup has less to haul and should charge less.

Older Homes, Older Systems

Wake County property records put Raleigh at about 119,500 single-family homes, averaging about 2,110 square feet and built around 1991. That's several years older than the county average and older than newer suburbs like Apex and Holly Springs, where the average home was built around 2009.

A Raleigh home built in the early 1990s has usually been through at least one HVAC system and often a roof already, and many are due again. Central air and heat pumps typically last around 15 to 20 years, and asphalt shingle roofs about 20 to 30. A yearly tune-up and a roof check after big storms cost far less than replacing either in an emergency.

Raleigh's neighborhoods are dense enough for group buying to work well. When several households on the same street book the same lawn, pest, or HVAC service, the crew spends less time driving between jobs, and that saving becomes a cheaper, discounted rate for everyone. Find a deal in your Raleigh neighborhood, share it with a few neighbors, and don't rake your leaves to the curb this year.
